How to Style Basic Outfits You LOVE
As someone who works from home and rarely goes anywhere “fancy”, casual outfits are my jam. That being said, after a long winter of joggers + hoodie combos and wearing my parka everywhere, I’m feeling inspired to create outfits that are still comfy and laid-back, but have a more stylish and put-together feel.
I’m not a style guru by any means, but here are 5 things I’ve found helpful:
-
Make a Pinterest board of inspiration. Choose a few of your favourite pieces, and then search how to style them for the season you are in. Eg: “How to style leggings for spring”. Pin your favourites to use as inspiration.
-
Shop your closet first. See previous blog about how to organize your closet and create a capsule wardrobe, so it will be easy to see exactly what you have and don’t have! Pull out the items that you can use in your outfits, and make a list of missing key items you may need.
-
Fill in the gaps. I love thrifting, so that will typically be my first stop. Check out this reel I made of a recent thrift haul with 4 tips that I swear by for successful thrift hauls (it’s an art). Try to stick to basics that can be worn in many outfits and situations.
-
Accessorize. It’s the small details that matter, so don’t underestimate the power of a simple piece of jewelry, or things like hats, scarfs, bags, hair accessories or shoes. You can be as bold or understated as you like, and this is the perfect opportunity to let your unique style personality shine through.
- Experiment. Try tucking or tying your top in different ways, different colour and texture combinations, or switching up accessories. Visual balance is key, and less is usually more! I find it helpful to take a photos of outfits, so I can remember it for later and to compare variations of an outfit side-by-side.
